Once that requirement is met, users can point the application at a folder of EML files exported from Thunderbird, Windows Live Mail, Outlook Express, or Apple Mail and have those messages land in an NSF database with folder structure, attachments, and HTML or RTF formatting intact. Running the process in reverse takes an NSF database and writes its contents back out as separate EML files that any EML-reading client can open, with the option to skip individual messages or limit the export to a date range instead of converting the entire mailbox. According to the company, the reverse direction gets used more often than people expect it to. One recent case involved a compliance review in which a legal team would only accept mail in raw EML format and rejected a Notes export outright, so the archived NSF database had to be converted message by message into individual files before the review could proceed. A separate case involved roughly 3,500 legacy messages sitting as EML files from an old Windows Live Mail archive that needed to be folded into an active Notes 10 database without losing formatted HTML bodies or PDF attachments along the way. "Nobody builds an NSF-only tool or an EML-only tool and expects it to cover the actual requests that come in," a company representative said. "The direction usually depends on which system someone is retiring and which one they are stuck supporting, so we built this to run both ways under one license rather than force a second purchase when the job flips." A free trial runs the full application in both directions but caps each export at 25 items per folder and does not include the database preview available in the licensed version.
