Is Periodontal Disease Genetic?

“Is periodontal disease hereditary?” is one of the most commonly asked questions during periodontal disease treatment. According to our Dentist/Prosthodontist in Longmont, several factors are believed to play a role in the development of periodontal disease. These include genetics, oral hygiene, and environmental factors, such as smoking, diabetes, and poor diet. While there is a genetic component to periodontal disease, environmental factors greatly impact the risk of developing it.

Genes

Genetic studies by our dentist/prosthodontist in Longmont have indicated that some people may be predisposed to periodontal diseases. The National Periodontal Diseases Consortium, based in the United Kingdom, conducts research aimed at identifying genes that cause aggressive periodontitis. These researchers also note that a polymorphism in the gene IL-17 may increase the risk of developing periodontal disease.

Polymorphisms in the genes of certain cells may affect the severity of the periodontal disease. Some polymorphisms are associated with more aggressive and chronic forms of the disease. They may also affect the transcription of immune factors.

Oral Hygiene

While some oral health problems have a genetic basis, knowing that you can prevent these conditions with a good oral hygiene regimen and periodontal disease treatment is important. Genes can affect your mouth's size, shape, and even your jawbone's structure. Crooked teeth, for example, are often hereditary and are difficult to clean and maintain properly. Bacteria found in plaque can build up on your teeth and cause cavities. These cavities can affect the deeper layers of your teeth.

Although it is possible to be genetically predisposed to periodontal disease, you can still improve your oral health to reduce risk. While poor oral hygiene is not the only factor contributing to periodontal disease, it is one of the most important aspects of answering the question, “is periodontal disease hereditary?”
